On Monday, Mr Medley presented certificates and prizes to all the students who took part in the Spellbinding Book Award this year.
Congratulations to everyone and well done to those who managed (or very nearly managed!) to read all ten books.

Click on this and you will get access to Oliver, the library's online catalogue or OPAC.
You can search the catalogue to find particular book/s, titles or subjects. The librarian's also make lists of different resources on OPAC eg recommended books, reading lists.

Spellbinding 2011 Awards

Mrs Turnbull and 2 Year 7 students travelled to Penrith for the Spellbinding Award Day. The three shortlisted books were The Enemy by Charlie Higson, Candor by Pam Bachorz and Unhooking the moon by Greg Hughes.
Students from schools all over cumbria voted for the overall winner - which was Unhooking the Moon.

Holocaust Memorial Day

Each year on 27 January the world marks Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD). HMD has been held in the UK since 2001. 27 January was chosen as the date for HMD because it was on this date in 1945 that the largest Nazi killing camp Auschwitz-Birkenau was liberated.

What is HMD about?
It is about remembering the victims and those whose lives have been changed beyond recognition by the Holocaust of World War II, Nazi persecution and other genocides (killing of a racial or cultural groups) in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and the ongoing atrocities today in Darfur.

Why should we have a special day to remember these victims?
HMD provides us with an opportunity to honour the survivors but it’s also a chance to look to our own lives and communities today. Genocide doesn’t happen overnight, it’s a gradual process which begins when the differences between us are not celebrated but used as a reason to exclude or victimise others.
By learning from the lessons of the past, we can create a safer, better future.

Anniversary of Florence Nightingale's Birthday

Florence Nightingale was born 12th May 1820 in Florence, Italy. She was the daughter of a wealthy landowner and grew up in Derbyshire/Hampshire in England.
Florence - the Lady with the Lamp - is famous for her pioneering work as a nurse in the Crimean War .
She died on 13th August 1910 so this year is the centenary of her death.

Mr Stuart Eastwood from Border Regiment Museum gave a fascinating talk yesterday all about the life of the soldier in World War I. Mrs Jones, Mrs Armstrong and Ms Mullin all brought their Year 7 groups to find out more about a Soldier's Life and to look at the wonderful resources. This was really useful background information for the Year 7s who are reading 'Private Peaceful' this term.

Spellbinding 2009 - the winner is decided!

Yesterday seven students from Year 7 represented Trinity School at the Spellbinding day held at the University of Cumbria in Newton Rigg. Over 100 students from schools all over Cumbria met to discuss the three shortlisted books and to decide the overall winner.

After a morning of discussion about the books - Ways to Live Forever, Blood Ties and The Declaration - the winning book was announced by the guest storyteller, Niall de Burca. He is pictured here with Trinity School's Spellbinders!

The Spellbinding Award for 2009 went to "Blood Ties" by Sophie MacKenzie. We have copies of this book in the library for everyone to enjoy.

Charles Darwin and Evolution - 200 years

This anniversary is one of the highest profile ones of the year, with exhibitions and television programmes already underway. Charles Darwin was the man who first put forward the theory of the evolution of living things.

It is 200 years since Darwin was born (on 12th February 1809) and it will be 150 years on 24th November 2009 since the publication of On the Origin of Species.

Questers - a new reading group for Yr 7-9 - was launched today in the Chapman Library. The group meets with Mrs Turnbull and Mrs Kirby every Tuesday and Thursday. Each member has to read 6 books chosen from a list of about 20 and has to give a review to the group when they have finished each book. Spellbinding 2009

Groups of Year 7 and Year 8 Students began
Spellbinding (Cumbrian Secondary Schools Book Award) just before half term.
There are ten books on the shortlist this year:

Each student is attempting to read all ten books by the beginning of May. They will be completing reviews, taking part in discussion groups and then deciding which of the books they thought was the best.
Some students will be attending the county Spellbinding Award Day in June where students from other schools will decide the overall winner—the best book!
